What is Progressive Overload & Why is it Important?

What is Progressive Overload?

Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed on the body over time. It is achieved by consistently challenging the body during exercise to stimulate a response, leading to improvements in strength and endurance.

How Does the Body Respond to Progressive Overload?

When muscles are challenged during exercise, muscle fibres experience small amounts of stress. During recovery, the body repairs these fibres so that they can better handle future demands. Leading to increased strength, improved muscular endurance, greater stability and control, better exercise performance and increased muscle size. The nervous system also adapts by improving coordination and helping muscles work more efficiently during movement. As the body is consistently challenged during exercise, it grows to meet greater physical demands.

How Does Progressive Overload Prevent a Training Plateau?

A training plateau occurs when the body stops changing, as it has become accustomed to a routine that is no longer challenging enough to create further progress. When workouts stay exactly the same for long periods of time, improvements in strength, endurance, and fitness may slow down or stop. Progressive overload prevents this stagnation by continuing to challenge the body in new ways. By slowly increasing demands over time, the body continues to improve.

How to Challenge the Body

Progressive overload is implemented by increasing weight or resistance, performing more repetitions or sets, improving exercise control or tempo, increasing speed or intensity, reducing rest time between sets, increasing range of motion, improving technique, increasing workout frequency or progressing to a more challenging variation of an exercise. This creates manageable challenges that encourage the body to adapt safely to difficulty. With a structured training plan, your workouts can be continuously adjusted so that you achieve the results you’re working towards.
